Back when I first started trading, I looked for a virtual trading room where I could hang out with other traders.
I didn’t manage to find one, and wasn’t able to start my own since live streaming technology at the time was prohibitively expensive.
These days, the costs have come down so I decided to give it a shot and spent some time live streaming my trading activity as an experiment.
Would it be a good idea to host a live trading room? I wanted to find out.
Live Streaming Test
After a couple weeks of testing I realized that a full daily 8-hour trading live stream is probably not going to work.
There is too much downtime (waiting) between trades, and I reckon most people don’t have the inclination to “hang out” on a live stream where nothing is actively happening 80% of the time.
Do you have any ideas/suggestions/alternatives? Or should I just scrap the whole idea? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
Next, let’s take a look at how my trading algos are doing.
Algos: Still Struggling
The algos took a -1.29% hit in August, which is both a relief and a disappointment.
On one hand, I’m relieved because the (demo) account equity has stopped sliding as aggressively as it did back in July (where it took a -2.06% hit).
On the other hand, this account is still in drawdown and even though the algos now look to be “fighting back”, it remains to be seen if their performance will continue to improve.
The monitoring continues, and if you’d like to stay in the loop, let me know in the comments section and if there’s interest I’ll keep everyone updated if/when things turn around.
Short Term Trading
I recently had an epiphany about one of my short term trading strategies and I’ll be tracking its performance on a new live account:
I have quite some experience with this trading approach and am fairly confident it has positive expectancy… but there are no guarantees in the market so we’ll just have to see how it goes.
If it continues to perform over the next few months I’ll be dedicating more capital to it and sharing the results here on the blog.
Your Thoughts?
I’m wondering if there’s value in hosting regular live interactions with my readers (via live streaming).
What do you think? What type of live interaction would be useful/helpful to you? Or would you prefer recorded (educational) videos?
Please share your ideas/suggestions/alternatives in the comments below.
Both live and recorded are good
Hi Ako, appreciate the feedback, thanks!
Chris,
I enjoy the live stream it is our time difference your on line in the middle of my night. I am in California and you are Singapore. What time GMT do you trade the 8 hours from here work for me that way. on your charts the current price nevers shows for me and the markets you are on at the time are so small I can barely see. I have your candle book and the online Makes It come to Life with your trading it is a Great help.
Regards,
Harry D Moore
Hi Harry, the stream was usually held 1 hour after the London open.
Thank you so much for the feedack, appreciate it.
Hey Chris,
I joined one of your live trading days on YouTube. I think that to make it so that people want to hang out, you definitely need to make it interactive. Chat was disabled when I joined so that’s no good. I’d also make it so that you are focusing on maybe 1-2 pairs during a time where you expect activity, so keep the stream short…say 1-2 hours and then following up with how the trade did. I wouldn’t just hang out for 8 hours with the stream open.
Best,
F
Hi Efe, I didn’t realize chat was disabled… it might have been a mistake/error on my part.
Thank you for the feedback!
Live and recorded are both useful although the former better for seeing really how a system is used. Live would also be better in my opinion for the shorter time strategies than longer term, but if these coincided with say a four hour closing there may also be a longer term trade entry to feature. Many thanks for your interesting blog
Hi Rori, thanks for the feedback. Appreciate it.
I am interested to see how the algos go.
Mm, 8 hours of not much happening is something I wouldn’t watch.
Maybe recording and editing of the insightful bits.
Hi James, appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. Thank you!
Hi Chris, I like the live stream and would attend if a time was split one two hour at London open and one from 8am Eastern to say 10AM.Thanks Jeffe
Hi Jeffe, that’s an interesting idea, thanks for it. π
Hi Chris. I haven’t watched 8 hours of anything in my life. I think a shorter type of live stream focusing more on market analysis could work well. Starting say 30 mins before a market open and finishing 30 mins to an hour or so after the market open. That way you can review the closing session and any trades that triggered as well as discuss the new session as it starts and any upcoming news or events. Any trades that set up along the way are a bonus. Cheers
Hi Robert, I’ve never watched 8 hours of anything in my life either, haha. The idea of the stream was for people to hop in and out whenever they wanted..
Your 30 min suggestion is a good one, thanks!
Hi, I dont have time to be following a stream, but a 10 minute overview of the trade: what you were looking at and why you made the trade followed by an outcome and a debrief would be awesome
